NEWS: TRAVELITE EDITOR AMONG WINNERS OF COMMONWEALTH SHORT STORY COMPETITION

I am glad to announce that I, Constance Obonyo, Editor of this blog was among the winners of the Commonwealth Short Story Competition, 2011. My short story, Stylish Marcella, was among the highly commended entries. For this, I received a 100 Pound prize.

The two organisations have produced two audio CDs containing the winning stories for broadcast on affiliate radio stations around the Commonwealth. The stories were read by actors and acresses of outstanding talent.

The winning entries were as follows:

1. Rejoinder by Phillip Nash, United kingdom - Overall winner and regional winner for Canada and Europe.

2. Martha by Basett Buyuka, Kenya - Regional winner for Africa.

3. The Maoist by Nikesh Murali, India - Regional winner for Asia.

4. Head Not Make For hat Alone by Barbara Jenkins, Trinidad and Tobago - Regional winner for the Carribbean.

5. Ginger Beer by Sarah Bainbridge, Newzealand - Regional winner for the Pacific.

6. The Crystal Snuff Box And The Papadum by Lavanya Arvind, India - Winner of the Special Prize For Women As Agents Of Change.

7. The Happiness Dress by Diane Browne, Jamaica - Winner of the Special Prize For Children's Stories.

8. The highly commended entries from Africa were:
     (a) Side-By-Side by Adele Mostart, South Africa.
     (b) The Lucky Girl by Sheillah Maonga, Kenya.
     (c) The Bride Price by Victor Idem, Nigeria.
     (d) Stylish Marcella by Constance Obonyo, Uganda.
     (e) Icarus by Jax Goss, Soth Africa.

9. The highly commended entries for Canada and Europe were:
     (a) When The Lions Came In Brown Boxes by Joyce thierry Llewelyn, Canada.
     (b) The Book Instead by Kate Clanchy, United kingdom.
     (c) Turnip Gratin by Susan Luddem, United Kingdom.
     (d) Prejudice by David Pinnel, United Kingdom.

10. The highly commended entries from the Carribbean were:
     (a) Love, Honour and Obeah by Kathyann Husbands, Barbados.
     (b) White Shoes by Edwina Griffith, Barbados.
     (c) Letting Cockroaches Live by Sonja Dumas, Trinidad and Tobago.

11. The highly commended entries from the Pacific were:
     (a) The Levee by Catherine Mojsiewwicz, Australia.
     (b) Work Life by Dominic Carew, Australia.
     (c) The Challenge by Ruperake Petaia, Samoa.
     (d) How Are You? By Lydia Sturton, Australia.

The overall prize was 2000 Pounds, while the regional prizes were 500 pounds each. The amounts for the prizes will be doubled for next year's competition. Details for next year's competition will be posted on the two organisations' websites from 18th October 2011.
